FILING A PROOF OF CLAIM

This section demonstrates the steps necessary to file proofs of claim and amended proofs of claim in CM/ECF.

STEP 1:  Click on the 'Bankruptcy' link at the top of the CM/ECF menu bar.

STEP 2:  The 'Bankruptcy Events' menu displays, click on 'File Claims.'

STEP 3:  Search for Creditor Screen
On this screen you will be prompted to enter (1) the case number, (2) the name of the creditor filing the proof of claim and (3) the type of creditor filing the claim (optional).  Click 'Next' to continue.

STEP 4:  Select a Creditor for Claim Screen
1.  Click the drop down arrow to display a list of creditors to see if the appropriate creditor is listed.  If so, select that creditor and proceed to step 4-4.

2.  If the creditor is not listed, click on 'Add Creditor.'
A.  Enter the case number and click 'Next.'
B.  Type in the creditor name and address in the box as you would type a mailing label.  Please note that you can only use 5 lines for the name and mailing address.  If you would like to type in more than one address, just separate each address with a blank line.
C.  Click 'Next' to continue.
D.  On this screen, it will display the number of creditor names/addresses that were entered.  click 'Submit.'
E.  Click on 'File a Proof of Claim' and go back to step 3.

3.  A pop-up window will open asking "Is this the correct creditor?"  Select 'Yes' if the creditor's name and address are correct.  Proceed to step 5.  If not, select 'No' and go to step 4-4.

4.  On this screen, you will be prompted to enter the case number and the creditor name.  Click 'Next' when finished.
A.  All the entered creditors with a name close to the one entered will appear by clicking on the drop down arrow.  Highlight the desired creditor and click 'Next.'
B.  Edit the name and/or address that appears in the box.  Please note you can only use 5 lines for the name and mailing address.  If you would like to type in more than one address, just separate each address with a blank line.
C.  Click 'Next' to continue.
D.  On this screen, it will display the number of creditor names/addresses that were entered.  click 'Submit.'
E.  Click on 'File a Proof of Claim' and go back to step 3.

STEP 5:  Proof of Claim Information Screen
NOTE:  If you are filing an amended proof of claim, enter the claim number of the original claim in the 'Amended Claim #' box and click on 'Find.'  If you do not know the original claim number click on 'Find.'  A pop-up window will display the claim information.  Click on the claim to be amended.  All of the previous claim information will display.  Edit as appropriate.

1.  Enter the total amount of your claim in the 'Amount Claimed' text box.
2.  If all or a portion of your claim is 'Secured' or 'Priority,' enter that amount in those boxes.
3.  If desired, you may enter additional information about the claim in the 'Description' and/or 'Remarks' text boxes.

STEP 6:  PDF Upload Screen
CM/ECF only accepts documents saved as PDFs.

  • CM/ECF only accepts documents saved as PDFs. For information on converting Word or WordPerfect files to PDF, visit Technical Tips.
  • CM/ECF can support up to 5 MB per file.

Click 'Browse' to open the browse pop-up window. 

Find your document in the browsing pop-up window.

Click on the document to select it.

NOTE:  The NEF will display the name of the document PDF, as it appears at this time.  For example, a document that is saved as 'Opposition5.pdf' on your computer will be displayed in the NEF as 'Opposition5.'  Please label documents in an appropriate way so as to protect a client's privacy/etc.

Click 'Open' to select the document.

If you have additional documents you would like to attach, click the 'Yes' radio button located directly below the 'Browse' button.  Click 'Next' to continue.  Go to step 7.

If you are not attaching any documents, click 'Next' to continue.  Go to step 8.

STEP 7:  Attached Files Upload Screen
If you selected ‘Yes’ to attachments, you will now be prompted to upload the additional file you wish to attach to your petition.

1. Click the ‘Browse’ button to open the browse pop-up window.

2. Find your additional file in the browsing pop-up window.

3. Click on the additional file to select it.

4. Click ‘Open’ to upload the additional file.

5. Category: Click the ‘Category’ drop down arrow to reveal the list of options. Select the appropriate category for the additional file.

6. Description: Click in the ‘Description’ text box and type a description of the additional file if desired.

Note: You must now select a Category or type a Description of the additional file. You may complete one field or both fields. HOWEVER, you cannot leave both fields blank.

7. Click the ‘Add to List’ button once you have completed the Category and/or Description fields.

8. Repeat this process for each additional document you wish to file with your petition.

9. Click ‘Next’ to continue.

STEP 8: Notice of Electronic Filing Screen
At this time, the Notice of Electronic Filing Screen with the claim number of your filing This is the confirmation that your document has been filed.  Print out for your records if you desire.
