Free Credit Counseling

As of April 30, 2010, free credit counseling is available at:

ConsumerBankruptcyCounseling.info

However, that website warns that it can take 3 to 5 days before credit counseling is complete. If you need to file bankruptcy sooner than that (for example, to stop a garnishment or a foreclosure), you will need to contact another approved credit counseling agency that can complete the credit counseling before you file your bankruptcy case.

In addition, you may find that another agency provides services that are more helpful to you. See the FTC publication Before You File for Personal Bankruptcy: Information About Credit Counseling and Debtor Education (on the U.S. Trustee website) and its suggested list of questions to ask in selecting a credit counseling agency.

If you decide to use the website, you must make sure that ConsumerBankruptcyCounseling.info is still an approved credit counseling agency for the District of Columbia.
